Living in NYC

I love living in NYC. I also enjoy my ME time. I've been here for about 2.5  years now and believe a lot of my friends have came and gone. A lot of the people I was close with moved back to Seattle. I think its funny when I am out and about and end up meeting new people its always from the west coast. I never thought myself as a WEST coast gal, but I know that's where my heart will always be.

I know you've heard the saying "follow your heart", and I did to realize I love living in NYC for the exploring, building foundations/connections/new relationships. I also realized that people come in and out of your life here or maybe I'm getting older. I had excuse me HAVE many friends back in Washington state and sometimes I wish I could move NYC lifestyle to Seattle. I would have friends and be able to explore and enjoy life without ever being bored. NYC is never boring. Ive also learned a new lifestyle of living. Here are a few tips I believe you will need to realize when you move here.....
(coming from Seattle)

Seasons: I never owned as many functional coats in my life. I always had TNF (the north face) rain coat when I wanted to dress down, a pea coat, and then other fun colorful looking coats. I was really into dressing fashionably or trendy before I moved here and owned a lot of heels, cute boots, but all that soon went away. I feel like IF I could afford to live in Manhattan again and not have five roomies I would be able to walk short distance and have fun and dress up. Its not something one (me) does all the time, but that isn't an actually "typically lifestyle" for everyone. I live a realistic lifestyle that allows myself to focus on the functional and actually what I really "NEED". I use to say sometimes its ok to spoil yourself, well living in NYC I haven't "spoiled myself" with items in a very very long time. Actually the last person who did was someone I was talking to. Its nothing to be ashamed about, but I realized materialistic things aren't always the KEY to a happy life. I rather eat tasty and delicious food.

Eating out: Speaking of food I loved to buy a bunch of food and have it for weeks and then head to the store and buy more and more food. I then realized I was spending an average of $300 a month of food. When I moved here I realized to get all the items I would visit three different stores, long lines, and take up my weekends. I realized its OK to start a new lifestyle. I now spend about average of $20-40 bucks (sometimes I don't shop for the week) on groceries and then just eat it until its gone, then I would go for two or one items down the street from work. I have realized this is about 100-150 in costs a month (breakfast/lunch/dinner). I then also added in "ONLY" eating at spots I never tried at least two to four spots a week. Its not always meals, sometimes its delicious savory and sweet bread, ice cream, cookies, cupcakes, smoothies, and sometimes I wouldn't always buy food, but I still kept up with my "new spots". I was able to save more money with this new lifestyle. I then started going to farmers markets where my produce was better quality and delicious. I did weekend food exhaustions and started freezing soups and food so when I "needed" something I would just pull it out, heat and go. It was an idea life and that's how I did that!

Networking: this was easy for me, because this is what I do ALL day long at my job. I ask ONE of my friends and they said this isn't something they do all the time. In fact its hardier for them to meet new people or even trust new people into their lives. I think its being open and not afraid of someone sharing their life experiences with you. I believe its important to always stay active in your community, work life, social life, and just being part of a group. I moved over here with Meetup. I was a part of it in Seattle and continued doing it as the years went on. I really think that helped. Meetup allowed me to attend many events and meet a lot of new people! I have went to special events, feeding the homeless, meals on wheels, pop up events, museum group gatherings, and really enjoyed myself. I also started being really active in YELP events/stores. I really enjoy being a part of the NJ team. We are always getting together and having brunch/drinks/chatting/ and its a group of people I have learned to know what they like and most of us live in NJ, but work in NYC. The YELP community if pretty keen.

Overall living in NYC I adapted very well to my me lifestyle in ways I didn't imagine! I have made moves I never imagined I would do....watch a Seahawks football game on a Thursday evening with friends. Hang out there all night and then head to the megabus pick up location on 8th and catch the bus to Boston! I had never been and wanted to go and my trip was only 12 bucks to and 14bucks back! I went over on a budget and managed to eat, survive 14degree weather for several hour, not renting a car and seeing the whole city! It was an amazing opportunity and wouldn't trade being able to do things like that for the world! I enjoyed my time in NYC!

What am I doing now???

I have recently moved back to Seattle! I have been here for two months. I have a great job, living in city, and haven't decided on a car yet! Living day by day in Seattle in a different lens then when I moved from here has been kind of exciting! Lots has changed but Seattle hasn't changed much! The city is quiet after 8pm and everyone is home resting for their next work day!

I hope this information given was a great resource to guide you! I know your thinking what is your top what you love in NY? I will be gathering that information very shortly and making it available soon!!!

Please forgive me as my computer died a month before I moved here. I will be up shortly promise!

  1. That was a great read Daisha. I'm from Toronto and I love visiting Manhattan as well because of all the places to explore and get lost. I want to go on the "High Line" next time I go back. Sounds like you're having a great life. I am really wanting to get out and do a little bit more travelling in Canada and hopefully Amsterdam when I can. Presently I'm in Niagara Falls and it's fun to be able to go into another country when the mood strikes me. I walk to the USA. Enjoyed your Yelp page. Good luck. Stevie.

    1. Hello Melweg,

Thanks very much for the message. Its great that other people can relate to NYC, its nice to hear positive things about NYC. Most tend to lean towards to it being dirty, the people are mean, etc, but honestly living there and visiting I can see all of that, but very happy to be home.

Amsterdam is really honestly quite amazing, different, livestock, culture, you get all the different lifestyles, other one I'd like to see (living and visiting).

Stanley Park is next on my list. I hiked mountain Rainer this last weekend and let me tell you breath taking. I would love to visit there, Niagara Falls. I'm going to Salt Lake City in August and cant wait, friend lives there and taking the advantage to checking it out!

Well happy reading, appreciate the post.

      Daisha
